New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) India has sent 26 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Honduras following the devastation caused by the recent tropical storm, 'SARA'.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on X, “A reliable partner for the Global South. India dispatched humanitarian assistance of 26 tonnes to Honduras in the wake of the recent Tropical storm SARA.”
The aid includes medical supplies and disaster relief materials such as surgical supplies, glucometers, oximeters, gloves, syringes, IV fluids, blankets, sleeping mats, and hygiene kits, all of which have been shipped from India.
Tropical Storm SARA formed off the coast of Honduras in November 2024, unleashing catastrophic flooding and landslides that devastated homes, livelihoods, and critical public infrastructure.
Many residents were displaced, with thousands of lives directly affected by the storm.
The damage has severely compromised safe access to water, hygiene, and sanitation, heightening the risk of diarrheal diseases and waterborne illnesses, particularly in children under 5.
Moreover, the threat of communicable diseases has risen significantly among the population, including acute respiratory illnesses, due to overcrowding and adverse conditions in shelters and homes.
Numerous shelters lack basic facilities and services essential for families, while health services struggle to operate due to damage to medical infrastructure.
India's timely aid to Honduras will provide vital relief to the impacted communities.
India and Honduras share friendly relations, with strong political, commercial, cultural, and developmental ties. India's development cooperation with Honduras has been robust.
During the Covid crisis, India provided essential medicines and PPEs to Honduras. Previously, in times of disaster, the Government of India has consistently offered monetary and material support.
India had donated medicines and medical supplies to Honduras in 1998 and provided financial aid during natural disasters, such as in October 2005.
