The Queensland Police Service (QPS) released a statement indicating that emergency responders attended to an incident where an 18-year-old man fell approximately 15 metres down an embankment near a river in Maudsland, located 55 km south of Brisbane, at 6:40 p.m. local time on Sunday.
Despite the efforts of paramedics who provided medical assistance, the QPS reported that the young man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Monday that the 18-year-old had been utilizing a rope swing from a rock embankment at the time of his fall.
Earlier in the day, a 55-year-old man lost his life after slipping and falling 30 metres from a waterfall in Behana Gorge, which is over 1,300 km northwest of Brisbane.
The QPS stated that emergency services were summoned to Clamshell Falls, a well-known swimming location in the gorge, at 1:30 p.m. after the man was reported missing in the water.
He was discovered about an hour later following a search and rescue operation.
"Medical assistance was provided at the scene. However, the man was declared deceased," a police statement noted.
The QPS confirmed that both fatalities are being treated as non-suspicious, and reports will be compiled for the coroner's review.
Earlier that same day, two individuals drowned at a notoriously perilous beach along Australia's southwest coast, as reported by police in Western Australia (WA).
Three people were swimming at Conspicuous Cliff Beach, 355 km south of the state capital Perth, when they were caught in a hazardous current around 2:40 p.m. local time on Saturday.
The trio was rescued from the water by bystanders before police arrived to perform CPR.
A 44-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman could not be revived and were pronounced dead at the scene. A 42-year-old man was resuscitated and transported to a nearby hospital.
"All three adults were known to each other and were visiting from the Perth area," police stated.
