Kolkata, Feb 6 (NationPress) A 52-year-old man was taken into custody on Thursday morning for the sexual assault of a minor girl in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The suspect assaulted the young victim multiple times after threatening her with the possibility of sharing some private images, which he had captured and saved on his mobile device, on social media.
The arrested individual is set to appear in a district court on Thursday. He is facing charges under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The case emerged from a complaint lodged by the victim's grandparents.
According to their account, the victim was lured to the suspect's residence under the pretense of viewing special features on his mobile phone.
Upon her arrival, the suspect assaulted her and subsequently took indecent photographs on his mobile device. He then continued to assault her several more times while threatening to release her images online.
Initially, the minor, overwhelmed by the trauma, did not disclose the incident to anyone. However, on Wednesday night, she finally revealed the ordeal to her grandmother. Following this, her family contacted the police, leading to the suspect's arrest.
District Police sources indicated that the suspect admitted to his wrongdoing during the interrogation.
West Bengal has recently been in the spotlight for a series of rape and murder cases, many of which involved minors as victims.
One of the most heinous incidents in recent memory was the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.
The perpetrator in the R.G. Kar case was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court.
