Chamarajanagara, April 24 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D. K. Shivakumar, asserted on Thursday that the Congress government is solely responsible for the development of religious sites within the state.
This statement was made during a media interaction after he offered his prayers at the Male Mahadeshwara temple, a significant Hindu pilgrimage site located in the Chamarajanagar district.
Shivakumar stated, "We have initiated and are actively establishing development authorities for prominent religious locations across the state. Why did the former BJP and JD(S) administrations fail to undertake such initiatives? Our focus is on the welfare of all communities," he questioned.
"Recently, we launched the Saundatti Yellamma Development Authority. Previously, we had set up authorities for Male Mahadeshwara and Chamundi Hills. The transformation of the Male Mahadeshwara shrine—from its past state to its current form—is evident to all," Shivakumar remarked.
"Our goal is to offer a tranquil and welcoming environment for devotees when they visit temples," he continued.
"I wanted to have a darshan of Mahadeshwara and present my prayers, which is why I arrived here on Wednesday night and stayed. Mahadeshwara Swamy is a revered deity among the poor, middle class, and individuals from all communities. Even tribal groups have their own traditional methods of worship here," he added.
In response to questions about expectations from the special cabinet meeting taking place in Chamarajanagar on Thursday, he stated, "The entire government is here to meet the district's expectations. Previously, it took 4-5 hours to traverse from villages to the hills. Now, the roads have been significantly improved. Each year, millions of devotees cross the Cauvery River to reach this location. Following the implementation of the Mekedatu project, we are contemplating constructing an elevated road to enhance access. Decisions will be made regarding the necessary development works in the Cauvery river basin."
Shivakumar also mentioned, "By convening a cabinet meeting at Male Mahadeshwara Hill, we aim to elevate public awareness about our traditions and beliefs."
This marks the first such cabinet meeting held in the district since its establishment 28 years ago.
Chamarajanagar district is recognized as one of the most underdeveloped areas in the state. The special cabinet meeting is anticipated to result in significant decisions aimed at enhancing the region's development.
