New Delhi, April 23 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, upon his premature return from Saudi Arabia, organized a high-level security meeting at Palam Airport, New Delhi to evaluate the circumstances following the horrific terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K's) Pahalgam.
The meeting included key figures like National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, highlighting the critical nature of the situation.
The attack, occurring on Tuesday in the picturesque Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals, among them several tourists and an Intelligence officer, while injuring many others.
Witnesses described a rapid burst of gunfire as terrorists emerged from the adjacent forests and targeted a group of civilians.
Preliminary reports suggest that The Resistance Front, a terrorist group affiliated with Pakistan and considered an offshoot of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed accountability.
PM Modi, who was in Jeddah for the second India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council, had to truncate his visit due to the attack. He cancelled a planned state dinner and an address to the Indian community to return to New Delhi and oversee the situation.
In response to the assault, security measures have been significantly intensified across sensitive locations in J&K. Barbed wire barricades have been established, and rigorous vehicle checks are underway, particularly at Sarjeevan near Uri Nala in Baramulla.
Additional security forces have been dispatched to vulnerable areas to avert any further occurrences.
Meanwhile, in a demonstration of shared grief and protest, various organizations in Udhampur district have called for a complete shutdown, demanding justice for the victims.
The Pahalgam attack has received strong denunciation from global leaders, who have expressed their support for India.
