Kolkata, March 13 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, announced on Thursday that he will intentionally miss an official meeting next week attended by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This decision is a protest against the alleged efforts by the state administration, particularly Kolkata Police, to manipulate evidence in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, which occurred in August of the previous year.
The meeting pertains to the recruitment of the West Bengal Information Commissioner.
The commission consists of three members: the Chief Minister, the LoP, and the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay.
LoP Adhikari received an invitation from the State Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department to attend the meeting set for March 19.
However, he communicated his refusal to attend in a letter sent to the Secretary of the State Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department.
In his correspondence, LoP Adhikari expressed that he would not engage in any meeting with the Chief Minister as a form of protest against the alleged evidence manipulation by certain state officials regarding the R.G. Kar rape and murder incident.
Adhikari's letter stated, "Until those responsible (government officials and prominent politicians from the ruling party in West Bengal) involved in such reprehensible acts are imprisoned and our Sister/Abhaya receives Justice, my conscience will not permit me to attend any meeting where the West Bengal Home Minister, who is also the Chief Minister, is present," a copy of which is available with IANS.
Additionally, Adhikari questioned why the parents of the deceased woman doctor from the R.G. Kar rape and murder case have yet to receive their daughter's death certificate, even after seven months have passed since the tragic event.
"The State Health Department, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital authorities are forcing them to navigate an endless cycle of bureaucracy to obtain that death certificate," Adhikari remarked.
