Chennai, March 12 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in southern Tamil Nadu today.
This precipitation is caused by a trough of low pressure situated over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the Tamil Nadu coastline, extending up to 1.5 km above sea level. Consequently, isolated areas in the Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts are forecast to receive heavy rainfall.
The Meteorological (MeT) department has also indicated the possibility of very heavy rain in these districts, along with the Tenkasi district. Fishermen are warned to avoid the sea due to potential cyclonic storms. Cloudy weather is anticipated throughout Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. In Chennai and its neighboring areas, the sky will be partly cloudy, with chances of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in some locations.
On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu faced substantial rainfall following the orange alert issued by RMC. Numerous districts reported significant downpours, impacting daily life while benefiting summer crops like pulses, peanuts, and maize.
The delta region was heavily affected by rain on Tuesday, causing disruptions to normal activities. However, farmers welcomed the downpours, which are expected to support summer crops. The rain, starting at 11 a.m., continued into the late evening. Districts such as Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Perambalur, and Ariyalur experienced moderate rain, while Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Nagapattinam received heavy rainfall throughout the day.
Tiruchirappalli measured an average rainfall of 17.49 mm by 4 p.m., which decreased to 15.18 mm by 8 p.m. Although the afternoon showers were light, they intensified in the evening, resulting in waterlogging in several areas.
Thanjavur district recorded an average of 17.45 mm of rainfall, with no significant damage reported.
Tiruvarur town experienced the highest rainfall at 78.5 mm from morning until 6 p.m., while Kodavasal recorded 59 mm.
Mayiladuthurai district witnessed steady rain throughout the day, with Mayiladuthurai town recording 23 mm, Manalmedu 30 mm, and Sembanarkoil 25 mm.
Despite the heavy rain, no major damages have been reported. Farmers remain optimistic that these showers will assist in their agricultural efforts, particularly for summer paddy and manavari crops like pulses, peanuts, and maize.
The weather department has advised residents and authorities to stay alert, as heavy rains are expected to continue in southern Tamil Nadu. The orange alert remains active, and residents in the affected districts are urged to take necessary precautions.
