New Delhi, Feb 6 (NationPress) Ireland’s left-arm spinner Aimee Maguire has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after an independent assessment revealed that she employs an illegal bowling action.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Thursday that Aimee, aged 18, was flagged by match officials for a questionable bowling action during the first ODI of the ICC Women’s Championship series against India at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 10, where she recorded figures of 3/57 across her eight overs.
“She later underwent a bowling evaluation at the ICC Accredited testing facility in Loughborough, United Kingdom, on January 21, which indicated that the degree of elbow extension in her bowling action surpasses the 15-degree threshold allowed under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.”
“Consequently, under clause 6.1 of the regulations, Aimee is immediately barred from bowling in international cricket. This suspension will remain until she completes a re-assessment of her bowling action and is confirmed to bowl legally,” stated the ICC.
Aimee is the younger sibling of Ireland's opening bowler Jane Maguire and gained recognition when she achieved her career-best figures of 5-19 against England in her team’s first victory over their rivals since 2002 last year.
To date, she has participated in 11 ODIs and nine T20Is for Ireland, claiming a total of 25 wickets. After being reported for her suspect action, Ireland opted to exclude her from the remaining ODIs against India, substituting her with Genevieve Morrisey in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup squad in Malaysia.
While the senior women’s team suffered a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series in India, the U19 team successfully advanced to the Super Six stage of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia. They are now set to participate in the Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier alongside Bangladesh, Scotland, Thailand, West Indies, and hosts Pakistan in the competition taking place in April, which will determine the final two teams for the main tournament occurring later this year in India.
