New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel believes that Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have the autonomy to determine their future in One Day Internationals amidst ongoing discussions about their potential retirements following their success in the Champions Trophy.
Kohli showcased exceptional form during India's victorious run in Dubai last week, leading the team to a win against New Zealand in the final, securing their third tournament title.
The 36-year-old accumulated 218 runs across five matches, achieving an average of 54.50. He played a pivotal role with a match-winning unbeaten century against arch-rivals Pakistan and contributed a vital 84 runs against Australia in the semi-final.
On the other hand, captain Rohit has risen to become the second most successful Indian captain regarding ICC titles. Under his leadership, India captured their second ICC trophy in under nine months, following their triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup against South Africa in the final held in Bridgetown.
"They are the legends of cricket. Honestly, I believe they should decide when to conclude their careers. They are entitled to play as long as they choose. Both possess remarkable records and are extraordinary players, and as a bowler, it’s always daunting to bowl against either of them," Patel stated in an interview with IANS.
Regarding New Zealand's performance in the Champions Trophy, the 36-year-old remarked, "India delivered an impressive performance that day. New Zealand played exceptionally well throughout the tournament, showcasing outstanding cricket. The conditions were a challenge, but ultimately, India outplayed us on that occasion."
Patel is accompanying New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on a five-day official visit to India, invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
When asked about a potential meeting with PM Modi, the left-arm spinner expressed excitement, stating, "If I get the opportunity, that would be fantastic. At the moment, we are following the schedule, so we shall see how things unfold."
"I am truly looking forward to this visit. It’s always wonderful to return to India. Though I’m representing New Zealand, it’s a great chance, and I’m thrilled to be here," Patel added.
As the grand cricketing event, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, prepares to kick off on March 22, Patel noted that it serves as an excellent platform for New Zealand players to test their skills.
"The IPL is a colossal tournament globally and is highly respected. It’s always thrilling to watch, showcasing some of the best cricket and players. The organization and structure of the tournament are commendable. It has been remarkable for New Zealand players to come here, challenge themselves, and gain exposure on the world stage as well," Patel concluded.
