Barrackpore, March 16 (NationPress) India international Ngangom Bala Devi netted a hat-trick as the home team Sribhumi FC secured a full three points against Sethu FC with a thrilling 3-2 win in the Indian Women’s League 2024-25 at the Bibhuti Bhushan Stadium on Sunday.
The talent and experience of Bala Devi were evident as the dynamic striker scored for the home side in the 39th, 49th (penalty), and 65th minutes, following Sethu's initial lead through Hadijah Nandago in the 37th minute. Although Lisham Babina Devi managed to score for the visitors in the 88th minute, it was not enough to alter the outcome of the match.
This victory propelled Sribhumi FC to 12 points from eight matches, placing them in third place on the table, while Sethu FC now has 10 points from the same number of matches.
The first half hour was dominated by the home team. Sribhumi displayed such offensive prowess that Sethu was fortunate not to be trailing by multiple goals early on.
The formidable presence of Bala Devi in the Sribhumi attack had a significant impact on the Sethu defense, with Rimpa Haldar and Mousumi Murmu providing strong support from the wings. However, none could convert their opportunities into goals.
Sethu took the lead against the flow of play in the 37th minute. Striker Malavika P, who was active on the right wing, delivered a cross into the box that Hadijah Nandago headed in with a quick movement.
However, their joy was fleeting. Just minutes later, Sethu goalkeeper Sarangthem Khambi Chanu deflected a long-range shot that fell perfectly for Bala Devi, who confidently slammed the rebound home.
The brilliance of Bala Devi continued as she scored her second goal three minutes into the second half from a penalty kick.
Sethu failed to learn from prior mistakes. In the 65th minute, they let Bala Devi go unmarked during a corner, allowing her to easily complete her hat-trick by chesting the ball into the net.
