Galle, Jan 30 (NationPress) Australian batter Josh Inglis delivered an impressive performance, scoring 102 runs off 93 balls during his debut against Sri Lanka on the second day of the inaugural Test match on Thursday.
Inglis reached his first Test century in a mere 90 balls, marking it as the second-fastest century on debut in the annals of cricket history, only behind the legendary Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved his century in 85 balls against Australia in 2013 at Mohali.
The right-handed batsman, representing Western Australia, celebrated this milestone with a stylish back-foot punch for three runs, completing his century. Unfortunately, he was dismissed shortly thereafter while attempting to keep the scoring rate high as the visitors neared 600, edging a catch to cover and concluding his innings with 102 runs off 93 balls.
At the age of 29, he became the third Australian centurion in this innings. Earlier, opener Usman Khawaja scored 232, marking his first double hundred in Test cricket, following Steve Smith's contribution of 141.
This remarkable achievement by Inglis continues a fascinating pattern in Australian cricket; the last three Australian players to hit a century on their Test debut hail from Western Australia: Adam Voges against the West Indies in 2015, Shaun Marsh against Sri Lanka in 2011, and Marcus North against South Africa in 2009.
On Wednesday, Inglis was presented with his baggy green by Australian Test legend Geoff Marsh.
