Dallas, Feb 2 (NationPress) The Dallas Mavericks have officially announced the addition of 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis and guard Max Christie following their recent trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, which has sent franchise player Luka Doncic to the Lakers, causing a stir across the NBA on Sunday.
The 2024 NBA finalists shared the news on ‘X’, extending a warm welcome to the new members of the Mavs family.
The Utah Jazz played a key role in this three-team trade, allowing Los Angeles to acquire Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris, while Dallas received Davis, Christie, and a 2029 Lakers first-round pick. The Jazz acquired Jalen Hood-Schifino from Los Angeles along with two second-round picks.
Fans in Dallas have expressed significant outrage since the announcement, with many questioning the decision-making of the upper management for parting ways with a talent like Doncic.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is reported to be the architect of this trade, asserting that Davis’s inclusion enhances the team’s chances at clinching the championship, emphasizing that defense wins championships.
“We felt it was crucial to act before what was anticipated to be a challenging summer, with him being eligible for the supermax and a year away from having the option to opt out of his contract. We believe we took proactive steps. Teams have been preparing to pursue him once the opportunity arises,” Harrison stated.
“I truly believe that defense wins championships. Securing an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive focus improves our prospects. We are constructed to succeed both now and in the future,” Harrison shared with The News.
Harrison also mentioned that he attempted to reach out to Doncic via text and voicemail but did not receive a response. “I suspect he might not want to have a conversation with me.”
Currently, Doncic is sidelined due to a strained left calf he sustained during Dallas' Christmas Day game against the Timberwolves. He managed to play only 16 minutes before getting injured and has not participated in any games since. So far, Doncic has played in only 22 of 49 games for the Mavericks this season.
