Ponte Vedra Beach (Florida), March 17 (NationPress) Rory McIlroy triumphed in the 51st edition of The Players Championship on Monday, overcoming J.J. Spaun in a thrilling three-hole aggregate playoff.
In doing so, he became the first European golfer to secure two Players titles, having previously claimed victory at TPC Sawgrass' Stadium Course in 2019. This win places him alongside Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Scottie Scheffler as one of the few players with multiple major and Players victories.
"I am unbelievably proud and happy to win my second Players," expressed the world number two.
"It's the third time I've won on St Patrick's Day. It's been a good-luck charm for me," McIlroy added.
The week at TPC Sawgrass was filled with excitement, culminating in McIlroy's overtime performance that led to a definitive win. Earlier in February, McIlroy also secured the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, marking the first instance where he has won twice on Tour before the Masters.
He will be a prominent figure at Augusta National Golf Club, where he aims to pursue the only major title that has eluded him, while also striving to end an 11-year drought in majors.
"I feel really bad for JJ. He hit a great shot on the 17th but it just went straight through the wind," he remarked.
Earlier on Sunday, McIlroy let a few putts slip away in the final stretch, while J.J. Spaun's tournament-winning birdie putt on the last green fell just inches short. Consequently, the two players returned to the course on Monday for a three-hole aggregate playoff, having concluded the final leaderboard tied at 12 under 276, two shots ahead of Lucas Glover, Tom Hoge, and Akshay Bhatia.
