Hyderabad, April 24 (NationPress) The IPL 2025 journey for Sunrisers Hyderabad took a turn for the worse on Wednesday night as they faced their sixth defeat of the season, this time against the Mumbai Indians. In pursuit of a competitive score on a pitch that provided early movement, SRH found themselves in a dire situation at 13 for 4 within the first five overs.
Following the match, head coach Daniel Vettori acknowledged that the team’s approach to utilize the powerplay had backfired completely.
"The toss was undoubtedly crucial. We intended to bowl first since the conditions varied significantly from previous matches. We've discussed that it's a 280 or 250 wicket. The circumstances changed dramatically, making it challenging to assess the par score early on.
"In the beginning, we aimed to maximize the powerplay, but unfortunately, we kept losing wickets. Once we recognized that the pitch wasn't what we expected, we should have adjusted our target to around 180. However, that is quite difficult when you're at 24 for four after the powerplay.
SRH’s overly aggressive strategy during the powerplay, which had yielded success earlier in the season, turned out to be their downfall on a track that favored seamers. Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult capitalized on the conditions with effective new-ball spells, and Vettori conceded the team's inability to adapt swiftly.
"It’s vital to understand what a good score is and how to set that up. When Travis and Abhishek Sharma perform, their aggression leads to a lot of success for us. However, when they fail, it falls to the other batsmen to step up. This season, we haven’t had enough partnerships or players rising to the occasion. We had two today, but it was a bit too late for us.
The sole highlight in this disheartening match for SRH was a 99-run partnership between Heinrich Klaasen and Abhinav Manohar, which brought the team to a modest total of 143 for 8. Mumbai easily chased it down, but Vettori found merit in the team’s resilience.
Despite sitting second from bottom in the standings with only two victories in eight matches, Vettori remains hopeful. "The IPL has a long history, and many teams have found themselves in similar situations. Some have managed to turn their seasons around, like RCB last year after a tough start. If we can draw inspiration from them, we can improve.
"Mumbai has done it several times, but ultimately, we need one solid performance. We haven't managed to deliver a collective effort aside from the two games we won. Therefore, we must enhance dramatically across all three aspects of our game," he stated.
