Gazi, aged 40, originates from Saigura village in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Following intelligence inputs, a specialized team was organized, led by Inspector Ravinder Kumar Tyagi (SHO) and included SI Rakesh Kumar, HC Ramawtar, Ct. Rakesh, among others, under the direct supervision of ACP Dr Garima Tiwari from the Vasant Vihar Sub-Division.
The police report stated that to prevent and detect various crimes while keeping an eye on illegal foreign residents in RK Puram, the team was tasked with enhanced patrolling, verification, and interrogation of suspicious individuals.
During early morning patrols on March 13, 2025, specific intel about a suspect wandering in Mohammadpur, RK Puram, to procure scrap from the market was received.
“Acting quickly, the team apprehended the individual, who initially claimed to be from Malda, West Bengal. However, after thorough interrogation and verification, his real identity was uncovered as Afazuddin Gazi, son of Shadi Malik Gazi from Saigura village, Munsiganj, Dhaka,” stated the Delhi Police.
During the interrogation, Gazi confessed that he had completed up to the second grade at a madarsa in his village and has two brothers and two sisters. In 2022, he illegally crossed into India via the Benapole-Petrapole border, aided by a smuggler named Rafiq for a fee of Rs 4,000.
“Rafiq cut through the barbed wire fencing under the cover of night, enabling Gazi and three others to enter India. By dawn, they were taken to nearby bus terminals for further travel. Gazi subsequently boarded a train from Kolkata, arriving in Delhi, where he held various jobs, primarily as a ragpicker. He traversed the city to collect scrap from different markets and neighborhoods,” the police elaborated.
After his arrest, Gazi was presented before the FRRO at RK Puram, which has imposed movement restrictions on him under the Foreigners Act of 1948. He is required to stay at Sewa Sadan, Shahzada Bagh, Delhi until the completion of his deportation process.
