Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) Asfakullah Naiya, a prominent figure in the junior doctors' movement protesting against the rape and murder of a fellow doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, has approached the Calcutta High Court to contest the summons issued by the Bidhannagar City Police on Monday.

The petition was accepted by the single-judge Bench of Justice Trithankar Ghosh, and the case is set for hearing later this week.

Coincidentally, Naiya’s appeal to the High Court coincides with the day that a special court in Kolkata is expected to deliver its sentence for Sanjay Roy, the lone convict in the aforementioned rape and murder case.

On January 16, the West Bengal Medical Council issued a show-cause notice to Naiya following a complaint regarding his practice as an ENT specialist at a private medical facility, despite lacking the required qualifications.

Additionally, the Bidhannagar City Police summoned him regarding the same matter, and officers visited his home in Kakdwip, located in the South 24 Parganas district.

At the time of their visit, Naiya was at the R.G. Kar hostel, where he is pursuing his post-graduate studies specializing in ENT.

Naiya has expressed that he feels targeted by the state and police authorities due to his active involvement in protests regarding the tragic rape and murder of the junior doctor.

Meanwhile, civil society and local residents have rallied in support of Naiya.

This past Monday, he formally challenged the police summons at the Calcutta High Court.

The body of the deceased doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9 last year.

This incident sparked widespread protests among the medical community and the public, with Naiya emerging as a key leader in the movement.
