Los Angeles, Feb 2 (NationPress) The 'Emilia Perez' actress Karla Sofia Gascon, currently experiencing backlash due to her racist tweets, has seemingly made disparaging remarks about her co-star Selena Gomez in the past.
Reportedly, Karla voiced negative opinions about Selena, according to a report from 'People' magazine.
In a tweet from 2022 that has since been deleted, Gascon, 52, referred to Gomez, 32, as a “rich rat” during a discussion about her rumored conflict with Hailey Bieber, as noted by The Latin Times.
As per the outlet, Gascon made her negative remarks while quoting a post from the Mexican media outlet Reforma, which displayed a photograph of Selena and Bieber, 28, coming together at the Annual Academy Museum Gala in October 2022, seemingly dispelling any rumors of a feud between the two.
According to 'People', the tweet supposedly posted on Gascon’s now-deactivated account read, translated from Spanish, “She’s a rich rat who plays the poor b** whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife”, referring to Selena Gomez’s ex, Justin Bieber, and his wife, Hailey.
The outlet also claimed that prior to sharing the tweet, the first-time Oscar nominee had posted an announcement stating she would star alongside Selena in 'Emilia Perez' later that year, suggesting she was aware she would be working with Gomez when she made her comments. Gascon had previously apologized for her racist and xenophobic tweets that criticized Muslim culture, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars on Friday, January 31.
In a statement to PEOPLE on January 30, Gascon addressed the resurfaced tweets. “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” she stated. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
The actress provided an additional statement to 'The Hollywood Reporter', claiming, in part, that there has been a “campaign of hate and misinformation.”
“I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future. I am a human being who also made, makes and will make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect,” she added.
