Ranchi, Jan 31 (NationPress) The Jharkhand government is currently on high alert after a five-year-old girl in Ranchi was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). Chief Minister Hemant Soren convened a high-level meeting on Friday with the Health Minister and senior officials to discuss the matter.
Deputy Commissioners and Civil Surgeons from all districts participated in the meeting via video conferencing.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure prompt examination and treatment for anyone exhibiting symptoms of the condition. He also urged hospitals and medical colleges throughout the state to prepare special wards, equipped with ventilators, oxygen supply, and crucial medicines.
Although GBS is not contagious, he emphasized the importance of timely treatment and enhancing public awareness.
Health Department Principal Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh reported that the affected child was admitted to a private hospital in Booti Mor, Ranchi, after recently traveling to Maharashtra with her family. A health surveillance team has collected detailed information about her situation, and stool samples have been dispatched to Pune for further analysis.
As of now, no additional cases have been reported in Jharkhand, but authorities are remaining vigilant.
Health Minister Irfan Ansari, who attended the meeting through video conferencing, confirmed that he is personally overseeing the case. The state government is also awaiting directives from the Central Government.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, Avinash Kumar, along with other senior officials, attended the meeting.
Several cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome have been documented in Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Rajasthan.
Medical experts indicate that GBS is an autoimmune disorder that can impact the nervous system, although it is not contagious. With prompt and suitable treatment, the majority of patients can achieve full recovery.
GBS is a severe condition that can advance swiftly, leading to bedridden status within a few days. It is associated with nerve damage that results in significant weakness of the limbs, trunk, and face. It is commonly preceded by a bacterial or viral infection (such as diarrhea caused by Campylobacter Jejuni bacteria or viral infections like dengue or chikungunya), which can severely affect the nerves.
In individuals suffering from GBS, the immune system erroneously assaults healthy nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, causing weakness and, in certain cases, paralysis or even death.
GBS is an uncommon yet potentially debilitating nerve disorder triggered by the immune system mistakenly attacking the body’s own nerves. It is often initiated by gastrointestinal or respiratory infections.
