Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 4 (NationPress) With the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) resembling Covid and currently circulating in China, Kerala's Health Minister Veena George highlighted that while it is merely a ‘winter phenomenon’ and less intense, it is prudent for the elderly, sick, and pregnant women to take precautions, including wearing masks.
Notably, during the Covid pandemic in 2020, Kerala reported its first case when a student returning from China tested positive.
On her social media, George mentioned that although the situation in China appears stable, it is wise to exercise due diligence.
"There are no alarming reports from China; however, there has been an uptick in flu and pneumonia cases. Given the global presence of Keralaites and their travels, it is advisable for pregnant women, the elderly, and the ill to wear masks," she stated.
She also reminded that China has experienced pandemics like SARS and Covid-19, which explains the heightened scrutiny whenever news emerges from there.
"Our advanced laboratories are ready to test for HMPV should the need arise. It is crucial to stay vigilant regarding international travelers arriving here. If they exhibit any respiratory issues, being alert is essential," she added.
"When children are unwell, it’s advisable for them to stay home, and any breathing difficulties must be addressed," the Minister advised.
The proactive measures taken by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government to combat Covid in 2020 received wide recognition and played a significant role in their success in the 2021 Assembly elections.
Indian health officials have reassured the public that there is no cause for concern despite numerous media and social media claims of rapid HMPV spread in China, five years post-Covid-19 pandemic. Some reports even suggest that hospitals and crematoriums are overwhelmed.
Dr Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), remarked, "The spread of HMPV in China is comparable to any other respiratory virus."
"Currently, there is no reason for panic regarding the prevailing circumstances," he added.
He explained that the illness can cause flu-like symptoms in the elderly and very young children.
Dr Goel noted there is typically an increase in respiratory virus infections during winter, and hospitals are prepared with necessary supplies and beds.
However, he clarified that there has been “no significant rise in respiratory outbreak data for December 2024” within the country.
