New Delhi, Jan 31 (NationPress) Lifestyle choices and workplace culture play a pivotal role in shaping the mental well-being and consequently, the productivity of individuals in India, as highlighted in the Economic Survey 2024-25 released on Friday.

Presented in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Survey emphasized that mental well-being involves a range of factors including mental-emotional, social, cognitive, and physical health, representing the overall health of the mind.

Beyond being an economic concern, mental well-being is essential for effectively managing life’s challenges and maintaining productivity.

According to the Survey, data indicates that mental well-being is dynamic and influenced by a variety of factors such as work culture, the number of hours worked, and personal lifestyle choices.

The report discusses how lifestyle, work environment, family relationships, and dietary habits are crucial for the mental health of citizens.

It particularly pointed out the negative implications of excessive screen time and the consumption of ultra-processed foods on mental health.

The Survey stated, “Enhancing workplace culture can significantly improve mental well-being, but lifestyle choices and familial circumstances also hold equal importance. Findings show that those who infrequently consume ultra-processed or junk food experience better mental health than those who do so regularly.”

Conversely, individuals who seldom engage in physical activity, spend excessive time on social media, or lack strong family ties tend to report poorer mental well-being.

The report concluded that Lifestyle choices and workplace culture are crucial for mental well-being and, therefore, productivity. To achieve India’s economic goals, immediate focus must be placed on lifestyle choices formed during childhood and youth.

The Survey also illustrated that toxic work environments and extended hours at the desk can have detrimental effects on mental health, ultimately hindering the nation’s economic growth.
