Chennai, Jan 6 (NationPress) Two youngsters in Chennai have been diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and are currently recovering, according to officials on Monday.

Medical professionals indicated that both cases are associated with common respiratory symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough.

Officials from the Tamil Nadu Health Department informed IANS that preventive measures are actively being implemented to curtail the further transmission of the virus. They also confirmed that the affected children are showing good signs of recovery.

The initial case was identified at a private hospital located in the Chetpet area, where a child was admitted due to respiratory symptoms, including fever, cold, and cough.

After conducting diagnostic tests, it was established that the child was infected with HMPV.

Another child, who is currently receiving care at a private pediatric facility in Guindy, also tested positive for the virus.

Both children displayed similar symptoms, which at first seemed to be typical seasonal illnesses but were later recognized as HMPV after thorough medical assessments.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), first discovered in 2001, is a respiratory virus that predominantly impacts young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems. It is part of the same family as the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and can result in symptoms ranging from mild cold-like effects to serious respiratory conditions such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

Typical symptoms of HMPV include fever, cough, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue.

Severe instances may necessitate hospitalization, especially for vulnerable populations like infants and the elderly.

Officials from the state health department are engaged in discussions to enforce safety measures and preventive actions throughout Tamil Nadu. Notably, both the HMPV virus and the SARS-CoV-2 virus exhibit similarities, as they cause respiratory disorders in individuals across all age groups.

Young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune defenses face a heightened risk of severe illness. Both viruses are transmitted through respiratory secretions from coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, as well as by touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.

As it stands, there is no available vaccine for HMPV, and antiviral treatments are not recommended.
