Seoul, Jan 20 (NationPress) Approximately 90 individuals have been apprehended in relation to the violent unrest that transpired at the Seoul Western District Court and the Constitutional Court over the weekend during demonstrations against the formal arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, as reported by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) on Monday.
The police intend to initially request an arrest warrant for 66 of these individuals, with five having already attended a related court session on the same day, according to the Yonhap news agency.
Among the 66 detainees, 46 face charges for violently breaching the Seoul Western District Court early on Sunday morning following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Yoon. Additionally, 10 individuals are charged with obstructing a vehicle transporting prosecutors and investigators related to Yoon's case, while another 10 are accused of scaling the court's walls or assaulting police officers, the SMPA stated.
The agency revealed that three YouTubers are among the 46 individuals who unlawfully entered the courthouse.
The apprehended individuals, ranging in age from their teens to their 70s, saw those in their 20s and 30s representing 51 percent, or 46 people, as highlighted by the SMPA, which pledged to pursue strict penalties for all unlawful actions and their perpetrators.
Previously, a total of 86 outraged supporters of impeached President Yoon were detained for storming the court and are likely to face serious legal repercussions, sources indicated.
Between Saturday and early Sunday, police took action against protesters for breaking into the Seoul Western District Court in response to the court's decision to formally arrest Yoon due to his unsuccessful martial law attempt, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Yoon's supporters forcefully gained entry into the court by climbing walls, breaking windows, and throwing plastic chairs, trash, and other objects, while also spraying a fire extinguisher at police officers stationed nearby.
They were part of an estimated crowd of 44,000 Yoon supporters who gathered outside the court on Saturday as the impeached President attended a hearing concerning the extension of his detention.
