Warsaw, Feb 3 (NationPress) Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged the European Union (EU) to stand firm in unity as the bloc confronts the looming threat of a trade conflict with the United States.
During an EU leaders' meeting in Brussels on Monday, Tusk cautioned that escalating trade tensions with Washington could pose a severe paradox for Europe, highlighting the necessity for solidarity in facing challenges from its closest ally.
"This may be the first significant trial of the European Union's solidarity and unity in an unprecedented scenario filled with unexpected developments from our primary ally," Tusk stated, as reported by the Polish Press Agency.
He emphasized the importance of "common sense, calmness, and responsibility" in tackling potential trade disputes. "We need to manage our relations with the U.S., while also maintaining a sense of our own dignity and strength. We must undoubtedly be united," he continued, as per Xinhua news agency.
The United States stands as the EU's largest trading partner, with European nations mainly exporting pharmaceuticals, vehicles, and sophisticated machinery to the U.S.
In 2023, the EU noted a trade surplus of 85.6 billion euros (88.68 billion US dollars) with the United States, according to Eurostat. Nonetheless, US President Donald Trump has criticized the trade imbalance, pointing out a US-EU trade deficit of 213 billion US dollars in 2024, labeling it an "atrocity" and pledging with "full certainty" to impose tariffs on EU products.
Labeling trade wars as "a complete mistake," Tusk characterized the situation as "one of the cruelest paradoxes" for the EU, given its partnership with the United States. He expressed hope that the EU's "firm, clear, friendly" approach would resonate with the American administration.
