Kabul, April 23 (NationPress) India has generously donated 4.8 tonnes of vaccines to Afghanistan, reinforcing its commitment to humanitarian aid in the South Asian region.

The shipment includes vaccines aimed at preventing rabies, tetanus, hepatitis B, and influenza.

On Wednesday, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health conveyed its heartfelt thanks to India for this significant contribution.

"The Afghan Ministry of Public Health has received a crucial delivery of vaccines from India to assist in fighting rabies, tetanus, hepatitis B, and influenza," the statement from the ministry stated.

"The leadership of the Ministry expressed gratitude towards India for this generous support, deeming it a vital step that could potentially save thousands of lives throughout the nation," it continued.

The Ministry added that this vaccine donation will be pivotal for Afghanistan, where access to essential medical supplies is severely hampered by ongoing instability and economic hardships.

Earlier in January, during a meeting in Dubai between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, India reaffirmed its commitment to humanitarian assistance for the Islamic nation, particularly focusing on the health sector and refugee rehabilitation.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Foreign Secretary highlighted India's longstanding friendship with the Afghan populace and the robust people-to-people ties shared between both nations. He emphasized India's willingness to address the immediate developmental needs of the Afghan people.

During discussions on current Indian humanitarian assistance initiatives, the Afghan Minister expressed appreciation and gratitude to Indian leadership for its ongoing support to the Afghan populace during the meeting.

"Given the pressing need for developmental initiatives, it was agreed that India would explore opportunities for engaging in development projects in the near future, alongside the existing humanitarian assistance program," stated the MEA.

The MEA reported that by January, India had dispatched multiple shipments totaling 50,000 MTs of wheat, 300 tonnes of medicines, 27 tonnes of earthquake relief supplies, 40,000 liters of pesticides, 100 million doses of polio vaccine, 1.5 million doses of Covid vaccine, 11,000 hygiene kits for drug rehabilitation, 500 winter clothing units, and 1.2 tonnes of stationery kits, responding promptly to the needs of the Afghan people.
