Beirut, Feb 1 (NationPress) Tragedy struck as two individuals lost their lives and ten others sustained injuries from Israeli airstrikes in eastern Lebanon, as reported by official and security sources.

The Public Health Emergency Operations Center of Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health issued a statement confirming that the Israeli airstrikes on Friday targeted Janta, a village situated in the Bekaa region, leading to these casualties, according to Xinhua news agency.

An anonymous Lebanese security source informed Xinhua that Israeli warplanes executed four airstrikes early on Friday, focusing on Janta and illegal crossings along the Lebanese-Syrian border in eastern Lebanon.

This source further elaborated that Israeli jets unleashed eight air-to-ground missiles on the targeted locations, resulting in multiple casualties, the destruction of a truck, and considerable damage to illegal crossings connecting Lebanon and Syria.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) noted that Israeli warplanes carried out numerous airstrikes around 3:00 a.m. Friday on the eastern mountain range in the Bekaa region.

Moreover, the strikes impacted a truck laden with batteries and scrap metal in the Al-Wawiyat area, as well as the Jabb Al-Ward crossing near the outskirts of the town of Hanider in eastern Lebanon.

A senior official from the Lebanese Civil Defence reported to Xinhua that rescue teams transported two deceased individuals and several injured victims from the affected sites to hospitals in the Bekaa region, highlighting that one of the injured persons is in critical condition, and rescue operations remain ongoing.

Since November 27, 2024, a ceasefire agreement has been in effect between Israel and Lebanon, stopping clashes that ignited between the Israeli army and Hezbollah on October 8, 2023, amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The conflict further escalated in September 2024.

Despite the ceasefire, the Israeli military persists in conducting strikes within Lebanon, asserting that these actions are aimed at neutralizing Hezbollah threats.

The agreement established a 60-day timeframe for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon, but this deadline lapsed on January 26 without the completion of the withdrawal.
