Washington, Feb 3 (NationPress) President Donald Trump declared on Monday that the increase in tariffs on goods from Mexico will be postponed by one month, suggesting that a potential deal may be on the horizon. Discussions with Canada are also in progress, as Trump engaged in talks with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“I just had a conversation with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico,” Trump shared on Truth Social, shortly after the Mexican president revealed the postponement in a message on X.
Trump continued: “It was a very friendly conversation wherein she consented to immediately deploy 10,000 Mexican soldiers to the border between Mexico and the United States. These troops will be specifically tasked with curbing the influx of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into our nation. We also agreed to temporarily suspend the expected tariffs for a one-month period.”
Negotiations with Mexico will involve Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
“I am eager to take part in those discussions with President Sheinbaum as we strive to reach a deal between our two nations,” Trump remarked.
The proposed tariff increases of 25 percent on imports from Mexico and Canada (10 percent for Canadian energy) and 10 percent on goods from China were scheduled to take effect on Tuesday.
Trump also communicated with Canada’s outgoing Prime Minister Trudeau. “Canada doesn’t even allow US banks to operate or conduct business there. What’s that all about? There are many such issues, but it’s also a DRUG WAR, and hundreds of thousands have perished in the U.S. due to drugs flowing through the borders with Mexico and Canada. I just spoke to Justin Trudeau and will be in touch with him again at 3:00 P.M.,” Trump stated.
