Bengaluru, Feb 21 (NationPress) Eleven individuals have been detained on accusations of executing bike stunts, wielding swords and machetes, and instilling fear while ostensibly celebrating the sacred festival of Shab-e-Barat in Bengaluru.
The police have confiscated seven motorcycles and initiated a search for the other suspects.
In a media briefing, DCP (East) D. Devaraja mentioned that Shab-e-Barat was commemorated on February 13 and extensive security measures were implemented from Tannery Road Junction to Nagawara Junction in Bengaluru.
However, a group of 11 to 15 individuals emerged from the D.J. Halli and K.G. Halli regions, making their way towards the Outer Ring Road, Ramamurthy Nagar, K.R. Puram, and Avalahalli while performing stunts on their motorcycles, Devaraja stated.
He noted that the accused brandished machetes, executed stunts, and recorded videos, with one of them posting the footage on Instagram.
"We have filed a case under the Arms Act at the D.J. Halli police station. To date, we have detained 11 individuals and seized seven motorcycles. Some of the suspects have gone underground, but we expect to apprehend them within a day or two," he stated.
The DCP emphasized that Shab-e-Barat is a revered occasion when individuals visit cemeteries to pray for their departed elders.
Nonetheless, such actions of intimidating the public under the guise of celebration are intolerable, he asserted, stating that stringent measures will be enforced to discourage young people from partaking in such conduct.
In response to queries regarding individuals brandishing swords in public spaces in Bengaluru, state Home Minister G. Parameshwara remarked, "This is against the law, and the police will respond appropriately. Those involved will be apprehended and charged under relevant statutes."
"These individuals will certainly face prosecution. We will not permit anyone to take the law into their own hands. We remain vigilant and will take necessary actions against such occurrences," he added.
