Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) A leader from the Trinamool Congress in the Malda district of West Bengal has issued an ultimatum to the state police regarding an extortion threat received by the chairman of the English Bazar municipality, former state minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury, allegedly from a member of D-Company.

Abdul Rahim Boxi, the district president of Trinamool Congress in Malda and the party's representative from the Malatipur Assembly constituency, stated that if the police do not act swiftly, the party workers will have no choice but to respond.

"Whether it’s the recent murder of our party councillor Dulal Sarkar from English Bazar municipality or the latest extortion threat aimed at Chowdhury, there's a significant conspiracy at play here. The police are investigating, and I trust that the culprits will be apprehended. If they fail, our party members will take matters into their own hands. They will not stay silent," said Boxi on Saturday morning.

On Friday, Chowdhury lodged a police complaint after receiving a call that morning from an unidentified individual claiming to be Pradeep from D-Company, threatening to eliminate his family unless he paid Rs 20 lakh within 24 hours.

Previously, Chowdhury ignored two WhatsApp messages of a similar nature, dismissing them as jokes. Reports indicate that investigating officials have detained and are questioning three individuals regarding this matter, but they have yet to contact the person who made the extortion call.

Investigators suspect that the call might have been made by either cloning the number or through the Internet.

In the meantime, the local BJP leadership in Malda has urged the police to investigate whether the threat was genuinely from D-Company or if it originated from a rival faction of Trinamool Congress in the area.

The Malda police are treating the situation with utmost seriousness, particularly following the recent murder of Trinamool municipal councillor Dulal Sarkar, who was shot in broad daylight last month.

Infighting within the ruling party in the district has been identified as a key factor behind the murder, with Trinamool's Malda town President and the party’s Hindi cell Chief, Narendra Nath Tiwari, being implicated as the mastermind behind the killing. He has since been arrested.

D-Company is a criminal syndicate established in Mumbai by the infamous gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
