Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) The individual responsible for the extortion call to Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, a prominent Trinamool Congress leader and the chairman of English Bazar Municipality in Malda district of West Bengal, was apprehended by law enforcement officials on Saturday afternoon.

The suspect has been named as Shahdat Sheikh, a local resident of Kaliachak in the same district.

During questioning, he confessed to making the extortion call to Choudhury from Kolkata and sending two WhatsApp messages beforehand, also from the city. He acknowledged that he intentionally traveled to Kolkata to execute the call and dispatch messages to evade police tracking through tower locations.

District police sources revealed that he obtained a new SIM card from Kolkata using forged documents to facilitate the call and messages. Following the call, he returned to Kaliachak on Friday night.

In his interrogation, he claimed previous acquaintance with Choudhury and stated that he had been under significant financial strain, leading him to the idea of making the extortion call.

However, sources indicated that investigators are verifying the authenticity of his claims and whether he has any genuine ties to D-Company.

D-Company is a notorious organized crime syndicate founded in Mumbai by infamous gangster Dawood Ibrahim.

Coincidentally, on Saturday morning, Abdul Rahim Boxi, the district president of the Trinamool Congress in Malda and the party legislator from the Malatipur Assembly constituency, issued a warning to the police, stating that party workers would be compelled to respond if immediate action was not taken.

On Friday, Choudhury lodged a police complaint after receiving a call on his mobile phone from an unidentified caller who claimed to be Pradeep of D-Company, threatening to eliminate his entire family unless he paid Rs 20 lakh within 24 hours.

Previously, Choudhury had ignored two WhatsApp messages of a similar nature, considering them to be pranks.

It is reported that investigators have detained and questioned three individuals in connection with this case since Friday.
