New Delhi, Feb 22 (NationPress) The average electricity supply in rural areas has risen from 12.5 hours in 2014 to 22.6 hours in 2025, while urban areas have seen an increase to 23.4 hours this year, as reported by the government.

Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, Manohar Lal, stated, “Our objective is to ensure power is available to everyone at all times, aiming for 100 percent electrification of households nationwide.”

The Minister noted that the fossil fuel-based power capacity has grown from 168 GW in 2014 to 246 GW by January 2025, marking an approximate 46 percent increase.

Furthermore, non-fossil energy capacity surged from around 80 GW in 2014 to approximately 220 GW in 2025 (as of January 31), which accounts for a remarkable 180 percent increase.

Speaking about the expansion of the transmission network, he highlighted that it has expanded from 2.91 lakh circuit kilometers (ckm) in 2014 to 4.92 lakh ckm in 2025.

Initiatives such as the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), PM Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), and Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) have significantly enhanced power accessibility over the past decade.

In a media briefing, the Union Minister declared that India has transitioned into a net exporter of power, with net exports projected at 1625 MU in 2025, a notable shift from being a net importer in 2014.

He also indicated that energy shortages have diminished from 4.2 percent in 2014 to just 0.1 percent in 2025, while efforts are underway to address current energy deficits.

Approximately 2.13 crore smart meters have been installed, with plans for an additional 19.8 crore smart meters, 52.5 lakh DTRs, and 2.1 lakh feeders sanctioned.

The government is keen on advancing electric vehicles, planning to install 1 lakh EV charging stations by 2030 to support electric mobility.
