New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that the Marathi language has served as a symbol of liberation from invaders during years of oppression. Furthermore, he noted that Marathi language and literature have paved the way for social emancipation for marginalized and underprivileged communities, emphasizing the contributions of esteemed social reformers such as Jyotiba Phule, Savitribai Phule, Maharshi Karve, and Babasaheb Ambedkar, who fostered modern thought in Marathi.
During his inaugural speech at the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in the capital, PM Modi acknowledged the bravery of Maratha leaders like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, and Bajirao Peshwa, who valiantly resisted their adversaries. He pointed out that during the struggle for independence, figures like Vasudev Balwant Phadke, Lokmanya Tilak, and Veer Savarkar challenged colonial rule.
He underscored the vital role of Marathi language and literature in these contributions, noting that Marathi has enriched the nation with profound Dalit literature.
PM Modi emphasized that due to its progressive outlook, Marathi literature has also ventured into science fiction. He recognized the remarkable contributions of Maharashtra’s people in Ayurveda, science, and reasoning throughout history, asserting that this culture has consistently welcomed new ideas and talents, resulting in Maharashtra's advancement. He noted that Mumbai has risen to become the economic hub not just for Maharashtra, but for the entire nation.
When discussing Mumbai, the Prime Minister remarked that literature discussions would be incomplete without mentioning films. He pointed out that it is Maharashtra and Mumbai that have uplifted both Marathi cinema and Hindi films. He referred to the current acclaim for the movie 'Chhava', which depicts the bravery of Sambhaji Maharaj based on Shivaji Sawant's Marathi novel.
He highlighted that Marathi was recently awarded the status of a classical language, fulfilling a long-awaited dream for over 12 crore Marathi speakers globally. He expressed that it was a significant honor in his life to have realized this recognition.
“Language is more than a tool for communication; it is a vessel of our culture,” proclaimed the Prime Minister. He pointed out that while languages evolve within society, they also play a pivotal role in shaping it. He noted that Marathi has articulated the thoughts of countless individuals in Maharashtra and beyond, contributing to our cultural evolution.
Citing the words of Samarth Ramdas on the essence of the Marathi language, PM Modi stated: “Marathi is a comprehensive language that embodies valor, beauty, sensitivity, equality, harmony, spirituality, and modernity.”
He remarked: “Our language carries our cultural heritage. Indian languages have never been at odds with one another; instead, they have always assimilated and enriched each other.”
The Prime Minister underlined that efforts to create divisions based on language are countered by our shared linguistic heritage, emphasizing the importance of enriching and embracing all languages while advising against such misconceptions.
He pointed out that today, all languages in India are recognized as mainstream languages, highlighting the initiatives aimed at promoting education in all major languages, including Marathi.
PM Modi noted that the tradition of the Sahitya Sammelan will reach its 150-year milestone in 2027, marking the 100th Sahitya Sammelan. He urged everyone to prepare for this significant occasion. He acknowledged the contributions of many young individuals who are promoting Marathi literature via social media and encouraged creating platforms to recognize their talents.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of enhancing Marathi education through online resources and initiatives like Bhashini.
He proposed organizing competitions focused on Marathi language and literature for the youth, expressing confidence that these initiatives and the inspiration derived from Marathi literature would motivate 140 crore citizens towards a Viksit Bharat.
