Rewa, March 16 (NationPress) At least six individuals have been apprehended in relation to a fatal assault on a police team in Madhya Pradesh's Mauganj district, resulting in the deaths of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a civilian, as reported by police on Sunday.

Divisional Commissioner of Rewa, Saket Prakash Pandey, who visited the incident location on Sunday, informed the media that the situation has been stabilized, although police forces have been dispatched to maintain law and order in Dabra village within Mauganj.

“When an additional police team arrived, they discovered the body of a man who had been held captive inside a house. Six individuals were subsequently arrested and are currently under police interrogation,” Pandey stated.

He added that during the police operation to rescue the captive, a large group of women, armed with sticks and stones, gathered outside, while men concealed themselves inside with axes and other lethal weapons.

“The police team sent to rescue the captive did not include any female officers, despite the significant presence of women at the scene. They began to throw stones, and the police refrained from retaliating. This is a tragic event,” Pandey remarked.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who has been visiting Gurugram and New Delhi since Saturday evening, stated that he has communicated with senior police and administrative officials, instructing them to promptly visit the site.

“What transpired in Mauganj is deeply distressing. An ASI has lost his life, and numerous others have sustained injuries. The situation is under control, and I have instructed senior officials to reach the location immediately. I trust that normalcy will return swiftly,” Chief Minister Yadav conveyed in a statement released on Sunday.

The incident unfolded in Gadara village under the Shahpur police station in Mauganj district, approximately 60 km from Rewa, when a police team was alerted that individuals from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) had taken a man, Sunni Dube, hostage during the Holi festival on Friday.

Upon the police team's arrival, they were assailed by villagers, leading to the death of ASI Gautam. The officers called for backup, and SDPO Ankita Sulya arrived with reinforcements around 5 p.m.

For the subsequent two hours, Sulya engaged in negotiations with the villagers, who ultimately agreed to unlock the door of the room where Dube was being held.

Dube was found dead in the room, as reported by Sulya.

The tribal community had accused Dube of murdering one of their family members, Ashok Kumar. However, police clarified that Kumar had perished in a road accident.
