New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) Amidst a fierce critique from US President Donald Trump regarding USAID's funding in India, the annual report from the Finance Ministry, led by Nirmala Sitharaman, reveals that $750 million allocated by the US agency has been directed towards government initiatives focused on food, agriculture, rural development, energy, and environment during the fiscal year 2023-24.
Importantly, none of these initiatives involve political funding in India.
According to the Finance Ministry's report for 2023-24, “Currently, seven projects totaling approximately $750 million are being executed by USAID in collaboration with the Government of India.”
For the fiscal year 2023-24, USAID has committed a total of $97 million (around Rs 825 crore) across the seven projects, as stated in the Finance Ministry report.
The projects encompass initiatives related to agriculture and food security, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), renewable energy, disaster management, and health. Additionally, funds have been allocated for the Sustainable Forests and Climate Adaptation Programme and the Energy Efficiency Technology Commercialisation and Innovation Project, as outlined in the annual report.
President Trump has sparked controversy by alleging that the Biden administration allocated $21 million through USAID to influence voter turnout in India’s elections.
In response, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated, “Certain information has been disseminated by individuals from the Trump administration, which is understandably concerning. As a government, we are investigating. I believe the facts will emerge. USAID was welcomed here in good faith to conduct beneficial activities; however, there are now insinuations from America suggesting otherwise. This is alarming, and if there is any truth to it, the public deserves to know who is involved.”
The Congress party has called for a white paper detailing funds received in India from foreign developmental agencies and aid channels.
