New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) As the Delhi Assembly elections approached, the focus on financial support for women voters became a pivotal strategy, with all political groups, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Opposition parties like BJP and Congress, attempting to capitalize on this to secure their victories.
The leader of AAP introduced the Mahila Samman Yojana, which aimed to provide a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 to women from economically disadvantaged families, with a promise to increase this to Rs 2,100 if AAP retained power.
In response, both BJP and Congress unveiled similar initiatives in their manifestoes, with BJP proposing Rs 2,500 monthly support under the Mahila Samridhi scheme and Congress offering the Pyari Didi Yojana.
Ultimately, it was the BJP’s electoral commitment, reinforced by ‘Modi ki guarantee’, that resonated strongly among women voters, leading them to shift their support away from AAP and towards BJP during the elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured voters across various platforms that all the ‘freebies’ enjoyed by residents of Delhi would continue under a BJP administration, along with additional promises such as access to clean water and housing for slum residents.
Conversely, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal frequently warned voters that a BJP victory would result in the cancellation of their ‘revdis’.
The overt attempts to attract women voters, alongside youth and slum-dwellers, were plainly visible. However, the electorate of Delhi placed their trust in ‘Modi ki guarantee’. Political analysts suggest that a ‘silent revolution’ favored BJP, a sentiment echoed by polling agencies.
It is significant to note that women constitute over 46 percent of Delhi's registered voters, amounting to around 71 lakh.
In the 2020 elections, AAP was believed to have captured nearly 60 percent of the women’s vote while BJP secured approximately 35 percent.
In the 2025 elections, however, women voters shifted their allegiance to BJP. The party rolled out several commitments, including Rs 2,500 support for women and Rs 21,000 for expectant mothers, along with promises of free gas cylinders during Holi and Diwali.
While announcing the financial aid for women, AAP’s leader accused the Modi administration of obstructing and delaying the scheme, claiming that the Centre conspired against him, which impacted the consistent honorarium for women in the capital.
Despite these allegations, AAP’s claims failed to resonate with women voters, who largely supported BJP, as reflected in the election outcomes.
