New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) The International Space Station (ISS) has taken spectacular images of Mahakumbh 2025 -- the largest religious and human gathering in the world -- from its vantage point in space, as reported by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday.

The photographs, taken on Sunday evening, highlight the stunning view of this grand event occurring in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, along the banks of the Ganga river, which was beautifully illuminated.

“2025 Maha Kumbh Mela Ganges River pilgrimage from the ISS at night. The largest human gathering globally is exceptionally lit,” stated NASA astronaut Don Pettit in a post accompanying the images on the social media platform X.

Pettit, who is currently in space, is noted as NASA's oldest active astronaut at the age of 69.

The Ministry remarked, “The images vividly depict the magnificence of the Mahakumbh mela's lighting along with the immense crowd, creating a mesmerizing sight along the banks of the Ganga River.”

Held every 12 years, Mahakumbh 2025 is a spiritual event that attracts over 450 million devotees globally and will run until February 26.

This gathering is considered the world’s most significant religious event, where millions of devotees immerse themselves in the Ganga River for spiritual purification.

So far, “over 13 crore devotees have participated in this sacred and spiritual rite by bathing at the confluence,” added the Ministry.

Additionally, a radar imaging satellite from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently transmitted images of the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

The visuals, captured by advanced optical satellites and the day-and-night capable radarsat -- RISAT-1A -- operated by ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Center in Hyderabad, reveal the significant infrastructure developments at Mahakumbh.

They depict the arrangement of structures and roads in the vicinity along with numerous pontoon bridges spanning the river network.
