New Delhi, Jan 21 (NationPress) Following the disappointing outcome of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, India has redirected its attention to the white-ball format, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs against England. The historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata will be the venue for the opening match of the T20I series on Wednesday.
Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, the team is set to welcome back pace stalwart Mohammed Shami ahead of the crucial Champions Trophy, starting next month. Shami's last appearance for India was during the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2023, after which he had to undergo surgery for a heel injury that sidelined him until November last year, when he returned to play for his state team, Bengal, in the Ranji Trophy.
Meanwhile, Mark Wood will rejoin the England squad for the first time since August. He will be part of a formidable pace attack alongside Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton, as the visitors announced their playing XI for the series opener on Tuesday.
In their T20I encounters, India and England have met 24 times, with India slightly ahead with 13 wins compared to England's 11. Notably, India has triumphed in five of the last seven T20I matches between the two teams since 2021. Their most recent T20I showdown was in the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup, where India claimed a memorable victory.
The series will kick off in Kolkata and proceed to Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai for the subsequent matches. The final T20I is scheduled to take place in Mumbai on February 2. After the T20I series, both teams will engage in a three-match ODI series starting February 6, providing fans a glimpse into India's preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
