New Delhi, March 13 (NationPress) At just 20 years old, Jyoti Singh made her senior debut for India at the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 (Women), participating in four matches, including a stunning victory over the World No. 1 ranked Netherlands.
“Hearing the national anthem resonate in the stadium during my debut was an extraordinary experience that I will cherish forever,” she expressed in a statement from Hockey India.
Jyoti perfectly encapsulated her debut tournament experience: “My time was fantastic, particularly our triumph against the Netherlands on the final day. It was rewarding to contribute to the team’s significant achievement alongside seasoned players,” she remarked.
Recounting the moments leading to her initial game, Jyoti revealed, “I learned I was debuting against Spain the night before the match. I was so nervous I struggled to sleep. The senior players helped me feel more at ease during breakfast the next morning.”
“Sushila Chanu advised me to play without fear and reassured me that there was no pressure, stating that the senior players would be there to support me. Savita told me to avoid taking unnecessary risks and to follow her lead throughout the match. This advice really resonated with me and benefited me during the tournament,” she added.
Jyoti had just returned from participating in the Hero Hockey India League with the Delhi SG Pipers when she learned of her selection for the senior team. “I was taken by surprise to be chosen so quickly. We had just started our preparations for the senior nationals when I received the news. I immediately called my parents, and they were overjoyed,” she shared.
Jyoti’s athletic journey is deeply rooted in her family. Her father, Dheeraj Singh, is a former athlete who represented India on an international level. He introduced her to sports during their early morning runs. However, her passion for hockey ignited through her cousin, Anuja Singh, who plays for Central Railways. “When my cousin visited during summer breaks, I was inspired to play hockey after hearing her stories. In 2015, I picked up a stick for the first time at the same academy (MP Women Hockey Academy, Gwalior) she attended,” Jyoti recounted.
Regarding her performance, Jyoti stated, “I need to enhance my speed. Competing in the Hero HIL and the Pro League has highlighted the necessity for me to quicken my pace to match the international attackers. I also aim to improve my passing skills, similar to how Sushila excels at it. She is an exemplary defender, and her ability to guide others from the back is truly inspiring.”
Prior to this, Jyoti captained the junior squad, leading her team to a gold medal at the Junior Women’s Asia Cup last December. Now, she has returned to junior camp and is determined to secure another medal for her country.
