New Delhi, March 14 (NationPress) Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson expressed that reuniting with Rahul Dravid, the team’s head coach, is a moment filled with nostalgia, as it was he who recognized his talent back in 2013 to play for the franchise.
Dravid was the captain of RR when an 18-year-old Samson made his IPL debut in 2013, later serving as team mentor for the subsequent two seasons. After gaining experience in the national setup, including coaching India to the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup victory, Dravid is returning to RR as head coach for the IPL 2025 season commencing March 22.
“It’s quite amusing how life unfolds. In my inaugural season, Rahul sir was the one who discovered me during the trials. He was the captain, on the lookout for emerging talent. After observing my performance, he approached me and said, ‘Alright, can you play for my team?’ From that moment to now, it feels surreal,” said Samson.
“Currently, I am the captain of the franchise, and after many years, Rahul sir has returned to coach the team. This is a distinctive and cherished experience. He has always been a part of the Rajasthan Royals family, and we are all thankful to have him back,” he added.
“I have had the opportunity to play under him at both Rajasthan Royals and in the national team when he was the coach. However, having him as a coach while I lead the side is exceptionally special. I eagerly anticipate learning a great deal from him in the coming years, and it’s incredibly exciting,” stated Samson on JioHotstar.
RR, the champions of the inaugural edition, will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on March 23. When asked about expectations from Dravid's second tenure with RR, Samson remarked, “I’ve always observed him from both afar and closely. He’s an outstanding professional who ensures that every detail of preparation is meticulously handled.”
“I spent time with him last month in Nagpur, Talegaon, and witnessed his level of involvement. From 10 AM to 5 PM, even in the heat, he was present, watching batsmen practice and bowlers throw, engaging with them, and discussing strategies with the coaches,” he elaborated.
“He is entirely devoted to the team, from A to Z. That’s something I admire and aspire to learn—how to enhance my preparation. Effective preparation is a fundamental aspect of his character, and I aim to integrate that into my own approach,” he continued.
When asked if Dravid ever gets fatigued, Samson replied, “That’s his passion for the game. It’s his homage to cricket. I remember observing him standing in the sun, near the sightscreen, practicing shadows alone. Even now, he is completely absorbed in the game. There’s so much to learn from his enthusiasm,” he concluded.
