New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two cricketers capable of halting the activities of the most populous nation, are gearing up for the Champions Trophy encounter against Pakistan on Sunday, potentially for the last time. In a candid discussion with IANS, former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif expressed his belief that the 2025 Champions Trophy will mark the final face-off between this esteemed pair and their fierce rivals.
Both Virat and Rohit have announced their retirement from the shortest format, with the next ICC 50-over tournament being the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
“I believe this is their last ICC tournament. Observing India’s batting order reveals a plethora of talented young players, such as Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan, eagerly waiting for their opportunity. I think it’s their final match against Pakistan unless they meet again in the finals,” Latif shared with IANS.
Known as 'The Hitman', Rohit has faced Pakistan in 19 ODIs, accumulating 873 runs. The 37-year-old boasts an impressive average of 51.35 against Pakistan and a strike rate of 92.38, with two centuries and eight half-centuries to his credit.
In 16 encounters, Kohli has amassed 678 runs against Pakistan, averaging 52.15 with a strike rate of 100.29, including three centuries and two half-centuries, with a top score of 183.
The upcoming match promises to be thrilling, as Pakistan finds itself in a must-win situation following a 60-run loss to New Zealand in their initial Group A match, while India emerged victorious against Bangladesh by six wickets. A defeat on Sunday would severely jeopardize Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the final round.
Latif further elaborated on key players he believes will be pivotal for both teams in this highly awaited contest.
“For India, Shubman Gill appears to be the key player; given his current form, he’s likely to influence the Champions Trophy significantly, but I’ve always had my eye on Rohit Sharma. He is a team player who often prioritizes the team’s needs over personal milestones.
“As for Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi is crucial; if they can secure early wickets, they stand a chance. I believe if Shaheen can swing the ball in Dubai, he could pose a threat,” he added.
