New Delhi, Feb 4 (NationPress) Australia’s talented young batter, Sam Konstas, will be departing the team’s tour of Sri Lanka ahead of schedule. The selectors have opted to bring him back to focus on New South Wales’ upcoming Sheffield Shield match against Queensland at the Gabba.
This decision follows Konstas’ exclusion from the selection list for the second Test, as the Australian management is keen for the 19-year-old to gain more first-class experience in domestic conditions, especially in Brisbane, where he has yet to participate in a Shield match.
Having been part of Australia’s squad in Sri Lanka, Konstas returned to the team hotel in Galle on Tuesday to start preparing for his journey back to Sydney. He expressed his gratitude for the chance to be part of the national setup and learn from some of Australia's elite batters.
“It’s been a tremendous honor being in the squad and learning from the likes of Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Usman Khawaja—the way they approach the game,” Konstas shared with The Sydney Morning Herald. “And, of course, gaining experience in the Asian region in Dubai. It’s been about grasping what works in these conditions, and I hope to replicate that when I return to Sydney. Recognizing your strengths and trying to maintain them as long as possible in these conditions is key.”
The selectors’ decision to send Konstas home also considers a possible Australia A tour to India later this year. After training in Dubai prior to the Sri Lanka series, he is expected to gain further exposure to subcontinental conditions in the months ahead, which could be crucial for his growth as a long-format player.
Konstas’ experience in Sri Lanka was impacted by an unexpected illness that put him in quarantine for three days during the first Test. Although he recovered in time to return to training, he was ultimately left out of the playing XI, a choice that drew criticism back home in New South Wales. Nevertheless, the young batter accepted the selectors’ reasoning behind his exclusion.
“I completely understood the decision,” Konstas stated. “Travis Head is a legend of the game and has been excelling in these conditions. For me, it was about gaining exposure to Dubai, Sri Lanka, and trying to learn. I feel like I have gained valuable insights that will help me if I play in the subcontinent.”
