London, Feb 5 (NationPress) Surrey has made a significant enhancement to their T20 roster by acquiring Mitchell Santner from New Zealand for the majority of the 2025 Vitality Blast season. The seasoned all-rounder, recognized for his left-arm spin and effective batting, is slated to participate in eight group-stage matches and, contingent on Surrey's qualification, the knockout rounds in September.
Santner's addition addresses a vital need in Surrey's T20 lineup, which was missing a dedicated frontline spinner last season. During the 2024 Blast campaign, Surrey depended on Dan Lawrence, Cameron Steel, and Will Jacks for spinning duties, but bringing in Santner introduces proven talent with over 200 T20 appearances.
“I’m genuinely eager to connect with the players and coaching staff at Surrey. I've received excellent feedback about the atmosphere and have greatly enjoyed my time playing at the Kia Oval in the past. I’ve been fortunate to compete against many members of the squad, so I’m looking forward to sharing the same dressing room and playing some exciting cricket,” Santner remarked following his signing.
Surrey has reached the semi-finals in the past two seasons but has not clinched the T20 Blast trophy since its first edition in 2003. The acquisition of Santner, who has recently assumed the role of New Zealand's white-ball captain, brings invaluable experience to their squad as they strive for a championship.
Santner is set to arrive in London after the IPL, where he is contracted with the Mumbai Indians. However, he will miss the final few group-stage matches due to international commitments with New Zealand but is anticipated to return for the crucial knockout rounds in September.
He is also expected to participate in The Hundred once again this season, having played for the Northern Superchargers last year.
Alec Stewart, Surrey’s High-Performance Cricket Advisor, voiced his enthusiasm regarding the signing: “Mitch will bring quality and experience to the Surrey side. He’s a recognized international cricketer who plays T20 cricket globally and has developed an excellent skillset.”
Santner will join his New Zealand teammate Nathan Smith at The Oval, with Smith contracted to play in both the County Championship and the Vitality Blast from May until the season's end, balancing his commitments with the Black Caps.
