Jaipur, April 28 (NationPress) Vaibhav Suryavanshi took center stage at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, etching his name in history as the youngest player to achieve a century in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring in just 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans.
At just 14 years and 32 days, Suryavanshi eclipsed previous record-holders Manish Pandey (19y 253d), Rishabh Pant (20y 218d), and Devdutt Padikkal (20y 289d). This remarkable feat also marks the second-fastest century in IPL history, trailing only Chris Gayle who achieved it in 30 balls, and it stands as the fastest century by an Indian, surpassing Yusuf Pathan's record of 37 balls.
While chasing a target of 210 against GT, Suryavanshi was aggressive from the start, launching a fierce assault on seasoned bowler Ishant Sharma, scoring 28 runs in the fourth over, which included three sixes and two fours. He continued his onslaught by hitting Washington Sundar for two sixes before reaching his half-century with a boundary.
He then further showcased his dominance against GT debutant Karim Janat, hammering him for three fours and three sixes in a spectacular 30-run 10th over, as the crowd watched in awe, resulting in a total of 11 sixes during his innings. His innings concluded at 101 after being bowled by Prasidh Krishna.
In addition to this incredible achievement, Vaibhav is also the youngest player ever to participate in the IPL, a record previously held by Prayas Ray Barman, who debuted at age 16 for RCB against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2019.
Last year, he made headlines as the youngest player ever purchased at an IPL auction when he was signed by Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.1 crore. His phenomenal performance in the 2024 season saw him shine both nationally and internationally.
Born on March 27, 2011, in Bihar, Vaibhav made his first-class debut for Bihar in January 2024, becoming just 12 years and 284 days old. During this debut, he scored 71 runs off 42 balls against Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, thus becoming the youngest Indian to achieve a List-A fifty.
On the international front, Vaibhav set the record for the fastest youth Test century by an Indian, achieving a blistering 58-ball ton against Australia in Chennai. He also played a crucial role in leading India to the ACC U19 Asia Cup final, contributing with two significant half-centuries.
