Rotterdam, Feb 23 (NationPress) Former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Robin van Persie has been named the head coach of Feyenoord, his childhood team. The 41-year-old has inked a deal to remain with the club until 2027.
Van Persie’s return to Feyenoord signifies an important transition in his career, moving from an accomplished player to a coaching role. His journey with Feyenoord started around 30 years ago when he debuted for the first team at the age of 18. The striker played a pivotal part in the club’s victory in the 2002 UEFA Cup.
Throughout his remarkable playing career, Van Persie achieved great success at top clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, and Fenerbahce. He became one of the leading strikers globally, winning numerous titles, including the Premier League with Manchester United and guiding the Dutch national team to the final of the 2010 World Cup. After rejoining Feyenoord in 2018, he was instrumental in their victories in the TOTO KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruijff Schaal before hanging up his boots at De Kuip in 2019.
"Everyone is aware of how special my connection with Feyenoord is. I am thrilled to collaborate with a talented staff to engage with the player group at 1908 and, subsequently at De Kuip, supported by the Legion, competing and achieving victories together," Van Persie expressed.
His coaching career commenced at Feyenoord’s Varkenoord academy, where he coached the Under-18 squad and specialized as a coach for the attacking line of the first team. His accomplishments in these roles led him to the head coach position at sc Heerenveen, and after garnering experience, he has now returned to Feyenoord as the new head coach.
In addition to Van Persie, Feyenoord has also brought on Rene Hake as the assistant coach for the first team. Hake brings over 20 years of coaching expertise from clubs like FC Emmen, FC Twente, and FC Utrecht.
The Feyenoord 1 staff will soon include head coach Robin van Persie, assistants René Hake, Etienne Reijnen, and John de Wolf, along with goalkeeper coach Jyri Nieminen.
