Amaravati, April 28 (NationPress) Paka Venkata Satyanarayana, representing the BJP, has been named as the NDA's candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Andhra Pradesh.

The Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) confirmed on Monday that Venkata Satyanarayana will contest in the election scheduled for May 9.

Currently, Satyanarayana serves as the chairman of the BJP's disciplinary committee in Andhra Pradesh.

State BJP leader D. Purandeswari, who is abroad in Europe, participated in the party's core committee meeting via videoconference, where Satyanarayana's candidacy was finalized.

This decision resolves the uncertainty regarding the candidate for the Telugu Desam Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Last week, a meeting took place between Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where it was agreed that the vacant Rajya Sabha position would be filled by a candidate from the BJP.

There were rumors that K Annamalai, the recently resigned president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, might be chosen. However, the leadership opted for a local figure to fill the vacancy left by V. Vijayasai Reddy, who departed from the YSR Congress Party.

Reddy’s term was set to last until June 21, 2028, but he resigned on January 25, 2025, prompting the need for a by-election.

According to the Election Commission of India’s timeline, the deadline for nomination submissions is Tuesday, with scrutiny set for April 30, and the last day for withdrawal of candidates is May 2.

The election for this vacant seat will occur from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 9, with vote counting also taking place that same day at 5 p.m.

Notably, as no other nominations are anticipated, Satyanarayana from the BJP may be elected unopposed.

The TDP-JSP-BJP alliance holds a total of 164 MLAs in the 175-member Assembly, while the YSR Congress comprises only 11 members.
