Wolverhampton, Feb 2 (NationPress) Matheus Cunha, the leading scorer for Wolverhampton Wanderers, has secured a contract extension at Molineux, committing to a new deal lasting four and a half years, ensuring his presence at the club until 2029.
Cunha had been rumored to be leaving the club during the January transfer window, yet he has proven to be an essential asset for Wolves this season. Currently, he leads the team with 11 Premier League goals and has also contributed four assists in the league.
The Brazilian forward was initially brought to Wolves on loan from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, with the transfer becoming permanent once specific conditions were met.
To date, Cunha has played 72 Premier League matches for Wolves, scoring 25 goals, making him only the second player in the club's history to achieve such a feat, following Raul Jimenez, who netted 40 goals before his move to Fulham.
“Matheus has experienced an incredible journey with us over the last two years, and witnessing his development into a significant figure within the Wolves family has been a privilege,” remarked Club chairman Jeff Shi.
“His rapport with everyone at Compton Park is admirable, his personality uplifts those around him, and we trust that this new contract will energize the team,” he continued.
“We can all recognize his talent on the field, but off it, he has matured into a group leader, and we are thrilled to see him sign a new deal. It’s vital for us to acknowledge our most impactful players, and Matheus certainly merits this contract,” he added.
Sporting director Matt Hobbs stated, “This new contract is a testament to Matheus's contributions, highlighting his significance to us on the pitch. He has earned this through his past and future efforts.”
