Mumbai, April 28 (NationPress) In a pivotal move to enhance India's technological framework, HMD Global, working alongside Free Stream Technologies (a venture from IIT Kanpur), Tejas Networks, and other collaborators, has unveiled plans to cater to the surging demand for Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones in India.
This revolutionary announcement will be made at the ‘World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit’ (WAVES) 2025, scheduled from May 1-4.
The D2M technology signifies a major advancement in broadcasting, offering the capability to deliver OTT and live TV, video, audio, and text messages straight to mobile devices without the need for Wi-Fi or internet connectivity.
This innovation is in sync with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ and bolsters the 'Make in India' initiative.
As part of this initiative, affordable feature phones, smartphones, and tablets driven by Tejas Networks will be produced. These devices are being crafted using the cutting-edge SL-3000 chipset from Saankhya Labs, which is essential for supporting the D2M platform.
Over the years, this technology has been rigorously tested in live networks through collaboration between Prasar Bharati, IIT Kanpur, and Tejas Networks.
Ravi Kunwar, VP and CEO of HMD India and APAC, stated, “This groundbreaking platform will enable consumers to enjoy a wide array of multimedia content directly on their devices.”
Sumeet Nindrajog, Director of FreeStream Technologies, emphasized the transformative impact of the D2M technology, stating, “This innovation is poised to change the way users consume content and data.”
He further noted that the partnership with HMD will establish a solid device ecosystem, which is crucial for the nationwide rollout of D2M services.
Parag Naik, co-founder of the former Saankhya Labs and Executive Vice President of Tejas Networks, elaborated on the prospects of D2M.
“The technology will facilitate the delivery of targeted advertisements, educational resources, emergency alerts, and more, in line with the government's aim for a digitally empowered India,” Naik explained.
Chris Ripley, President and CEO of Sinclair, Inc., also expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, saying, “We are excited to be at the forefront of global deployment and look forward to partnering with HMD to establish India as a leader in next-generation broadcast technology.”
