Seoul, Feb 2 (NationPress) Hyundai Motor, the leading automaker from South Korea, experienced a remarkable 15 percent increase in its United States sales in January compared to the same month last year, achieving its highest sales figures for January to date, the company announced on Sunday.

Hyundai Motor's sales in the U.S. reached 54,503 units last month, up from 47,543 units sold in January of the previous year, as reported by the automaker.

This year-over-year growth was primarily fueled by a significant 74 percent increase in hybrid model sales and a 15 percent rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales. Notably, the Santa Fe hybrid EV (HEV), Tucson HEV, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6 EVs all achieved record sales for the month of January, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.

In tandem, Kia, Hyundai's affiliated company and the second-largest car manufacturer in South Korea, also reported a 12 percent increase in U.S. sales year-on-year, totaling 57,007 units in January, marking a record for Kia in the U.S. for this month.

The company credited this sales growth to its strong lineup of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) as well as robust performance from the new K4 sedan.

Conversely, the combined vehicle sales of the leading South Korean automakers, Hyundai Motor and Kia, in Europe experienced a decline of 3.9 percent year-on-year in 2024, according to industry data.

Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) indicated that Hyundai Motor and Kia collectively sold 1,063,517 units in Europe last year.

ACEA's statistics revealed that Hyundai Motor's sales were nearly stable compared to the previous year at 534,360 units, while Kia's sales fell by 7.5 percent to 529,157 units.

The combined market share of Hyundai and Kia in Europe for 2024 was recorded at 8.2 percent, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points from the prior year.

Hyundai Motor Group announced that it successfully surpassed the milestone of selling over 1 million units in Europe for the fourth consecutive year.

In December, the South Korean manufacturers reported combined sales of 79,066 units, up by 2.7 percent from the same period last year.
