Los Angeles, Feb 8 (NationPress) It appears that the much-anticipated film musical focusing on the early life of musician Pharrell Williams will not be released, as it has been officially canceled.
The cinematic endeavor, titled ‘Golden’—previously known as ‘Atlantis’—was directed by Michel Gondry, according to Variety.
Originally slated for a broad theatrical release by Universal Pictures on May 5, insiders reported that this date was pushed back internally last year. The film features an impressive ensemble cast of renowned artists and an Academy Award winner, including Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak, and Jaboukie Young-White.
According to Variety, Universal initiated and funded the project as part of their ongoing creative collaboration with Williams, who is recognized for his work on the ‘Despicable Me’ series.
Multiple sources informed Variety that the film was discontinued following a mutual agreement between producers and Gondry that the film did not meet the expectations of its initial concept. Gil Netter produced alongside Williams and his creative associate Mimi Valdes.
“Upon entering the editing room, we all agreed there was no viable way to convey the story we had originally envisioned,” Williams and Gondry expressed in a joint statement. “We are grateful for the dedication of the talented cast and crew. While we are saddened that we cannot present this film, we have wonderful partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity soon.”
Insiders indicated that Universal will incur approximately $20 million in costs already invested in production. The studio refrained from commenting further beyond the joint statement from Williams and Gondry. Three individuals familiar with ‘Golden’ noted that the film was in the early post-production stage, implying it will never be completed, but all participants have received payment for their contributions.
