Kolkata, Dec 24 (NationPress) Tension emerged outside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special crime unit office located in the central government office (CGO) complex at Salt Lake in northern Kolkata on Tuesday, following demonstrations by junior doctors. These protests were triggered by the alleged shortcomings of the central agency in conducting a thorough investigation into the brutal rape and murder of one of their peers from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital that occurred on hospital premises in August.
The protesting junior doctors organized a demonstration, brandishing lock replicas and asserting that the CBI office should be locked due to its inability to file a supplementary charge sheet against the two suspects accused of tampering with evidence.
"A recent report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory has indicated that the seminar hall, where the victim's body was discovered on the morning of August 9 this year, may not even be the actual crime scene. This raises serious doubts about the direction of the CBI's investigation. We demand to know why these findings were not included in the charge sheet?" stated a junior doctor participating in the protest.
Earlier this month, a special court in Kolkata had granted bail to the former and controversial Principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, as the CBI failed to submit a supplementary charge sheet within the mandated 90 days post their arrests.
On Tuesday, when the protesting junior doctors arrived at the CGO complex, police from the Bidhannagar Commissionerate intervened by erecting barricades to halt their progress.
As the protesters attempted to breach these barricades, a confrontation ensued between them and police forces.
To date, the CBI has only filed a single charge sheet in the case, naming civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the "sole prime accused" in the heinous crimes of rape and murder. Another protesting doctor remarked that the CBI is merely replicating the Kolkata Police's initial investigative approach, which is to protect the true masterminds behind this horrific crime.
