Karachi, Jan 30 (NationPress) In an unusual love saga that has taken a turn for the worse, Onijah Andrew Robinson, an American citizen, has chosen not to depart from Pakistan after her 19-year-old partner in Karachi was unable to secure his family's consent for marriage.
Robinson declined to board a flight back home on Wednesday, creating a significant disruption at the Karachi International Airport. She initially refused to complete immigration formalities and later resisted boarding a Qatar Airways flight to New York.
The entire episode resulted in a flight delay of nearly one hour.
The 33-year-old had arrived in Pakistan from the United States in October with the intention of marrying her online boyfriend, Nidal Ahmed Memon. Robinson claims that while the young man agreed to wed her, his family objected and moved away from their residence in the Garden area of Karachi.
Abandoned by her partner, the American woman has been camped outside his home ever since, refusing to return to America and demanding compensation of at least $3,000 per week, along with Pakistani citizenship.
With her tourist visa now expired, Robinson has been drawing attention in the area, even as both Pakistani and US authorities attempt to persuade her to return to the United States.
“Robinson arrived in Karachi in October and spent about seven days around the airport. Eventually, the authorities advised her to leave the airport. From there, she went to the Garden area to her lover's address, only to discover that his family had moved and the door was locked,” shared a local resident.
“Months have passed since she has been conducting a sit-in in the parking lot of the building where her lover used to live. NGOs and officials have offered to arrange her flight back to the US, but she remains adamant about staying. Instead, she is now demanding $3,000 per week and Pakistani citizenship,” the resident added.
This situation has also created significant challenges for local security agencies and residents.
Police have been deployed at the building due to safety concerns related to the American woman, which has caused numerous issues for the local inhabitants.
“Every day, strangers gather around our apartment building to observe the American woman. This is a pressing issue for all residents and their safety,” remarked one resident.
Yet, Robinson shows no signs of leaving and persists in her demands.
“You need to give me $3,000 a week. I am becoming a citizen of Pakistan, that’s all I have to say,” she stated.
Authorities have attempted to persuade Robinson to move to a women’s police station to ensure her safety and devise a plan to return her to the US.
“I will leave for my home when I feel like it,” she insists.
Officials from the US Consulate in Karachi have also met with Robinson, urging her to consider returning to the US.
“It would be best to convince her to return to the US. However, if she declines, we cannot force her,” stated an official.
